Assistant Professor in Creative Writing

The Department of English and Victoria College in the Faculty of Arts & Science at the University of Toronto invites applications for a joint full-time tenure stream position (51% English & 49% Victoria College) in the field of Creative Writing with a preference for writers who work in more than one genre. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, with an expected start date of July 1, 2023. 

Applicants must have earned a PhD (strongly preferred), an MFA, or an MA in English in the field of Creative Writing, with a demonstrated record of excellence in research and/or creative professional activity, and teaching. We seek candidates whose research and/or creative professional activity and teaching interests complement and enhance our existing strengths in the Department of English and Victoria College. Fields of particular interest include fiction, poetry, nonfiction, drama, oral storytelling, stage and screen writing, digital and graphic forms. Demonstrated work across media — particularly with music or visual arts — would be an asset, as would experience and interest in the interactions between the arts and society. The successful candidate must have a national or international reputation as a creative writer. They will be expected to pursue innovative and independent research/and or creative professional activity at the highest international level and to establish an outstanding, competitive, and externally funded research program. 

Candidates must provide evidence of excellence in research and/or creative professional activity as a writer which can be demonstrated by a record of publications of an outstanding order by major presses or forthcoming publications meeting high international standards, the submitted statement on creative activity, awards and honours, other noteworthy activities that contribute to the prominence of the discipline, and strong endorsements from referees of high standing.
