The Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and the Honourable Harjit S. Sajjan, Minister of International Development and Minister responsible for the Pacific Economic Development Agency of Canada, today issued the following statement:

“Canada joins the international community in commending Mozambique for the completion of the disarmament and demobilization activities of the Mozambican peace process. This significant milestone represents a clear commitment from both the government and the Mozambican National Resistance (RENAMO) to protect and advance sustainable peace for future generations.

“Since the signing of the Maputo Accord for Peace and National Reconciliation in 2019, the government, RENAMO and the people of Mozambique have taken important actions to pave a path toward peace and security.

“We are proud to have supported the peace agreement since its inception and applaud the United Nations Peace Process Secretariat for its dedication to ensuring that all stakeholders were able to follow through on their commitments. As a founding donor and as a Donor Representative to the Peace Process Basket Fund, Canada has contributed more than $4.5 million in funding to support disarmament, demobilization, reintegration activities, and reconciliation efforts.

“Canada remains committed to supporting Mozambique in its continued efforts to build prosperous, inclusive and peaceful communities, including through ongoing reconciliation, decentralization, the promotion of gender equality in peacebuilding and the protection of human rights.”
