Faculty of Medical Sciences
Qualifications and Experience
The successful candidate must possess an MBBS or equivalent from a recognized university and at least one (1) of the following specialist qualifications in Ophthalmology recognized by the Medical Board of Trinidad and Tobago and The University of the West Indies:
- DM Ophthalmology or
- CCT/CCST (UK) or
- American/Canadian Board Certification in Ophthalmology or
- FRCOphth (London), followed by ideally, three (3) years served in the specialty at a senior level/second call or
- FRCS (Ophthal) Edinburgh/Glasgow/Ireland, followed by ideally, three (3) years served in the specialty at a senior level/second call or
- MRCOphth, attained prior to 2008, followed by ideally, three (3) years served in the specialty at a senior level/second call
Candidates should also possess:
- Teaching experience in the field of Ophthalmology and Optometry
- A good record of ethical research and publications in reputable, peer – reviewed journals
- Ideally, at least one (1) year clinical experience post specialist qualification
- Experience in clinical supervision of junior colleagues
- Evidence of leadership skills such as mentoring juniors to achieve success, conflict resolution, time management and chairing of meetings/group sessions
- Evidence of having used technology relevant to teaching including audiovisual aids and teaching in the virtual environment
- Evidence of assessment knowledge (summative and formative assessment of learners)
- Demonstrated ability to analyse medical literature and apply to clinical and professional practice
Candidates with the following would have an advantage:
- Fellowship specialist training in a subspecialty such as Paediatric Ophthalmology, Paediatric Glaucoma, Neuro Ophthalmology, Orbits and Oculoplastics, Anterior segment
- Postgraduate teaching experience
- Prior success in formulating research questions, designing research methodology, collecting and analysing data
- Prior success in the use of computer software application and statistical packages
The following would be considered assets:
- Certificate in Medical Education
- Master’s degree or PhD in a health related speciality
- Evidence of prior success in attracting external research and development funding
- Knowledge of healthcare financing, resource allocation and cost control
- Evidence of programme or project design, development and implementation
