Qualifications and Experience
The successful candidate must possess:
- a) PhD, which should be in Optometry or a closely related field OR a professional doctorate such as OD or equivalent; and
- b) (Ideally) One (1) year theoretical and clinical teaching experience at tertiary level in the field of Optometry after completing post graduate degree
OR
- MD or equivalent OR Master’s in Optometry or equivalent with extensive professional experience after completing post graduate degree
Candidates should also possess:
- Expertise in one or more of the following areas:
- Visual Science/Visual Optics
- Public Health/Primary Eye Care
- Binocular Vision
- Low Vision
- Management of Ocular Disease
Candidates with the following would have an advantage:
- Sub Specialty Training in one or more of the following:
- Visual Science/Visual Optics
- Public Health/Primary Eye Care
- Binocular Vision
- Low Vision
- Management of Ocular Disease
- Good record of research and publications in peer – reviewed journals
A certificate in university teaching and learning or equivalent would be considered an asset.
Candidates must be registered or be able to be registered with the Trinidad and Tobago Opticians Registration Council.
Special Responsibilities
- Working closely with staff in the Faculty of Medical Sciences in providing quality leadership in teaching and curriculum development
- Teaching undergraduate students
- Undertaking clinical supervision
- Participating in clinically oriented problem-based learning activities and Optometry externship
- Supporting University assessment and examination activities
- Conducting impactful research and publications
- Guiding and supervising student research
- Attracting external research and development funding
Personal Attributes
The Campus places high priority on individuals of integrity who can work well in a team and student friendly environment. Candidates should also possess good communication and interpersonal skills. A good command of both oral and written English is essential. Candidates should also:
- Be able to work in teams to provide leadership in teaching and curriculum development
- Be familiar with computer software application and statistical packages
- Possess strong patient management skills
- Have a high level of clinical competence
- Be able to interact and work well with staff, students and industry stakeholders
