The Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Foreign Affairs, met today in Brasilia with Mauro Vieira, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Brazil. The ministers discussed ways to enhance the collaboration between the two countries on shared priorities. The meeting also provided an opportunity to discuss Brazil’s priorities for its upcoming 2024 G20 presidency.

In this spirit of cooperation, the two ministers chaired the fourth edition of the Strategic Partnership Dialogue between Canada and Brazil. This dialogue focused on key areas of collaboration, including strengthening and reforming the rules-based international order, promoting democracy and human rights, Indigenous rights, protecting the environment, and ensuring peace and security, including by achieving sustainable peace in Ukraine.

Canada is committed to being a meaningful and reliable partner to Brazil by contributing to global and regional peace and stability and responding to international crises that impact the region. This is why Minister Joly signed the Canada-Brazil Defence Cooperation Agreement today.

The Defence Cooperation Agreement aims to enhance cooperation between the two countries across several key areas, such as peacekeeping operations under the United Nations, military operations, joint exercises, training, logistics support, the acquisition of defence products and services, and research and development. It also seeks to enhance cooperation in providing humanitarian assistance and supporting international emergency responses.
