About us:

The Tanenbaum Institute for Science in Sport (TISS) is a global centre of excellence for high performance sport science and sport medicine. Established through a generous $20-million gift from the Larry and Judy Tanenbaum Family Foundation, TISS brings together the sport science research of the Faculty of Kinesiology and Physical Education with the sports medicine research of U of T’s Temerty Faculty of Medicine, and the clinical and research expertise of the Dovigi Orthopaedic Sports Medicine Clinic and the Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute at Sinai Health. The TISS mission is to promote, catalyze, and support research in support of high performance athletes for professional and non-professional athletes and para-athletes, as well as for members of the wider community, both able bodied and with disabilities, who want to optimize their recreational participation in sport.

Your opportunity:

Reporting to the TISS Director, the Program Manager provides strategic, operational, administrative, and programmatic direction and oversight in order to contribute to and ensure the success of TISS. As the senior administrative member of the TISS team, the incumbent will play a pivotal leadership role in the strategic development and management of the initiative.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Identifying, developing and executing strategies for research and development collaborations
  • Developing project schedules including milestones, critical path, timelines, deliverables and reporting
  • Analyzing data to determine trends and effectiveness of programs and initiatives
  • Researching and recommending new opportunities for external collaborations and partnerships
  • Writing solicitation documentation in support of commercialization activities
  • Promoting research initiatives to increase program visibility and reputation
  • Promotingthe Institute’s research capabilities to industrial, commercial, governmental and non-governmental, and finance sectors to enhance research and innovation funding opportunities
  • Preparing project expense/revenue modeling, forecasting cost-to-completion and financial tracking


Essential Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in a related discipline or acceptable combination of equivalent experience.
  • Six to seven years’ experience managing complex relationships, strategy development and implementation of academic and research programs, preferably in a university, government, public health environment or other large organization.
  • Academic graduate experience involving research.
  • Experience building successful partnerships with granting organizations, industry patient advocacy groups, government and other not-for profit organizations.
  • Demonstrated experience in financial and communications management.
  • Experience working with complex groups and building relationships with academic staff, faculty members and both internal and external stakeholders
  • Experience working with national and international funding opportunities
  • Experience in resolving diverse issues relating to such areas as strategic implementation, operational, and Commercialization; and determines appropriate courses of action
  • Proven ability to assess opportunities in a variety of science and technical disciplines
  • Demonstrated ability to solve problems in a creative and effective manner
  • Excellent research, analytical, negotiation, entrepreneurial, and organizational skills
  • Exceptional oral communication skills, presentation and writing skills

Pay Scale Group & Hiring Zone:
USW Pay Band 17 – $96,978 with an annual step progression to a maximum of $124,017. Pay scale and job class assignment is subject to determination pursuant to the Job Evaluation/Pay Equity Maintenance Protocol.
