Course Number and Title: PHL383H1 – Ethics and Mental Health


Course Description:
An intermediate-level study of moral and legal problems, including the concepts of mental health and illness, mental competence, dangerousness and psychiatric confidentiality, mental institutionalization, involuntary treatment and behaviour control, controversial therapies; legal issues: the Mental Health Act, involuntary commitment, the insanity defence.

Sessional Dates of Appointment
: September 1st, 2022 – December 31st, 2022

Salary: $8,489.67 Sessional Lecturer I; $8,869.25 Sessional Lecturer I Long Term; $9,085.58 Sessional Lecturer II; $9,301.90 Sessional Lecturer III


Please note that should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail.


Minimum Qualifications
: Ph.D. in philosophy; strong academic record and professional promise; ongoing research and scholarly publications in the field; relevant and recent teaching experience.


Preferred Qualifications:
Preference will be given to applicants who have clearly demonstrated teaching excellence in the subject matter.


Description of Duties
: All normal duties related to the design and teaching of a university credit course, including preparation and delivery of course content; development, administration and marking of assignments; calculation and submission of grades; holding regular office hours; and, supervising teaching assistants.
