Tutor – Academic Capacity 1
Department: Aboriginal Student Services Centre, Student Services
Estimated Range of Hours of Work: 0-50 hours
Appointment Dates: September 28, 2022 – March 31, 2023
This position is represented by the Public Service Alliance of Canada – Academic Capacity Unit.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide tutoring to students, which may include explaining and demonstrating concepts and procedures, and clarifying subject areas;
  • Maintain regularly scheduled and posted times to provide consultation and feedback to students on coursework, quality of materials submitted for grading, and other similar matters;
  • Maintain records; may assist in the reproduction of tests; organize course materials; etc.
  • May assist with proctoring/invigilating tests, exams and quizzes;
  • Attend training related to the assigned duties and responsibilities;
  • Perform other related tasks as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Completion of academic studies and/or relevant experience appropriate to assigned duties.
  • Normally an undergraduate student at the University of Winnipeg who has successfully completed a minimum of 30 credit hours.
  • Successful completion of required training.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions, marking guides, policies and procedures.
  • Ability to meet specified deadlines.
  • Ability to interact empathetically with students, particularly in tutoring situations.
  • Capable of performing the duties as assigned.

Additional Requirements:

  • Applicants must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
  • Tutor students (individual or group basis) via remote delivery.
  • Tutors will be hired in various areas of experience such as essay writing, research methods & data analysis, chemistry, biology, math/stats.
  • Provide information to students on other available resources, such as: The Tutoring Centre for Math & Science, The Centre for Academic Writing tutoring and Library to help develop effective study techniques.
  • Critique and offer suggestions to maximize academic performance.
  • Be available during peak periods.
  • Completion and advance knowledge of specific courses to be tutored.
  • Strong writing skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Must be a full time student at the University of Winnipeg.
